Job Summary
Family Promise of Hawaii is dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness for children and families. As the Staff Accountant, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring FPH’s financial systems run smoothly as the organization grows to serving more families in need. This role ensures accurate financial records, timely invoicing of grants, and adherence to nonprofit accounting standards and funder requirements.
You’ll join a collaborative and supportive finance team, reporting to the Director of Finance and working closely with the Accounting Manager. Family Promise of Hawaii (FPH) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to transform the lives of families with children in Hawaii facing homelessness by providing housing, resources, and support. Founded in 2005, FPH operates emergency shelters to give families a safe place to sleep, study, and get back on their feet; provides individualized case management and rental assistance to help families navigate and overcome their challenges; and organizes community-based opportunities to help families build skills and social capital. Each year, FPH serves thousands of children, parents, and family members on Oahu and Maui.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proficient with Excel and double-entry accounting.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Trustworthy and dependable, with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn nonprofit accounting practices and organizational systems.
- Committed to high ethical standards and operating with professionalism and integrity.
- A team player who's open to feedback, adaptable to change, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, growing organization.
- A passion for the mission and vision of Family Promise of Hawaii.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
- At least 3 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience.
- Experience in nonprofit or grant accounting.
- General awareness of compliance needs (grant restrictions, cost allocation rules) and ability to flag potential issues.
- Knowledge of federal grant requirements (e.g., 2 CFR 200).
- Experience with or willingness to learn cloud-based systems and productivity tools, such as QuickBooks Online, Ramp,
- Smartsheets, and Box.
- Interest in professional growth, training, or certifications related to nonprofit finance.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this full-time position is $60,000 to $70,000.

Requirements
Essential Job Functions
Accounting & Bookkeeping (30%)
- Maintain general ledger entries and supporting documentation
- Perform monthly bank and account reconciliations
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
- Process accounts payable, including check cutting and vendor management
Grant Billing & Compliance (30%)
- Prepare monthly grant invoices and required financial backup
- Track grant expenditures against budgets
- Assist in ensuring compliance with grant requirements and restrictions
- Maintain organized records for audits and funder reporting
Cash & Banking (20%)
- Prepare and record bank deposits and checks
- Reconcile bank, credit card accounts, and reimbursements
- Monitor cash balances and flag discrepancies
Administrative & Operational Support (20%)
- Maintain financial filing systems (digital and physical)
- Review staff timesheets for accuracy and proper allocation
- Support audits and financial reviews
- Assist with other finance-related administrative tasks as needed
